Quick answer
Updated 30 Oct 2026
Meta requires two things: it must be clear the person is opting in to receive messages from your business, and it must name your business. WhatsApp’s Business Messaging Policy lets you message people only after they gave you their number and that opt-in. Meta also recommends saying what kinds of messages you’ll send and how to opt out, and local law still applies.
Where to use it
Step 01
On your website
Put an unticked checkbox next to the phone number field. The person ticks it themselves, and your form keeps a record of when they did.
Step 02
On invoices and receipts
Print the wording with your number. Customers who send the join word have asked for your messages themselves, and their message is your record.
Step 03
At the counter
A sign with a QR code turns a visit into an opt-in. Reply with the welcome message, so people know exactly what they signed up for.
What good opt-in says
Your business name
Required by Meta. Use the name customers know you by, ideally the same one shown on your WhatsApp Business profile.
That they’re opting in
Required by Meta. The person takes an action, such as ticking a box or sending a word, that shows they want your messages.
What you’ll send
Recommended by Meta. Name the kinds of messages, such as order updates or offers, and how often, so nothing comes as a surprise.
How to stop
Recommended by Meta, and the policy requires you to honour every opt-out. A stop word people can send at any time makes that easy.
Questions
Does opt-in have to mention WhatsApp?
Not under Meta’s rules. Meta says opt-in can be general rather than specific to WhatsApp, as long as you comply with local law. Naming WhatsApp still sets clear expectations, which means fewer blocks and reports.
Can I use a ticked-by-default checkbox?
Avoid it. A box ticked for the person isn’t them choosing to hear from you, and Oman’s data protection law requires written consent before sending marketing. Leave the box unticked.
Can I message a list I bought or got from a partner?
No. WhatsApp’s policy requires that people gave you their number and opted in to receive messages from you. Consent given to another business doesn’t carry over.
Do I need separate opt-in for offers?
Meta doesn’t require it, but recommends letting people opt in or out by message type, for example keeping order updates while stopping offers. People can also stop marketing messages from a business inside WhatsApp.
What do I do when someone sends STOP?
Stop messaging them. WhatsApp’s policy requires you to respect every opt-out request, on or off WhatsApp, including removing the person from your contact list. Bahrain’s data protection law gives you at most 10 working days to stop direct marketing.
Should I keep a record of each opt-in?
Yes, it’s good practice. Keep the date, how each person opted in and the wording they saw. If a customer complains or WhatsApp reviews your account, that record shows the opt-in was real.
