Quick answer
Updated 30 Oct 2026
WhatsApp restricts business numbers that message people without opt-in, ignore requests to stop, collect too many blocks and reports, use unofficial tools or automation to message at scale, or message about prohibited goods. Meta usually warns first, then blocks messaging for 1 to 30 days, then locks or removes the account. Severe harm, such as scams, means immediate removal.
How Meta enforces
Step 01
A warning
The first violation brings a warning naming the policy you broke, through Business Support Home, Business Manager, email and the account update webhook.
Step 02
Messaging blocks
Repeat violations bring a 1 or 3 day block on template messages, then a 5, 7 or 30 day block on all messages. You can’t add numbers while blocked.
Step 03
Lock or removal
Next comes an indefinite lock that only an appeal removes, and finally permanent removal from the platform if nothing changes.
What hurts your rating
Blocks and reports
WhatsApp scores the past seven days of blocks, reports, mutes and archives, weighted towards the most recent, plus the reasons people give.
Messages nobody asked for
Contacting people without opt-in breaks the policy, and Meta advises against open-ended welcome or introductory messages.
Too many messages
Meta’s guidance is to avoid sending too many messages a day, and WhatsApp holds back marketing to people unlikely to engage.
Ignored opt-outs
You must honour every request to stop, on or off WhatsApp. People who can’t opt out block and report instead.
Questions
Can I appeal a WhatsApp restriction?
Yes. If you believe your business follows WhatsApp’s policies, request a review from Business Support Home. Decisions typically take 24 to 48 hours. Not every spam restriction can be appealed; some you have to wait out.
Do I need opt-in if a customer gave me their number?
Yes. WhatsApp’s policy lets you contact people only when they gave you their number and confirmed they want messages from you. The opt-in must name your business.
Will a bulk sender or browser extension get my number banned?
It puts the number at risk. WhatsApp’s Messaging Guidelines prohibit unofficial clients, bulk messaging and automation used to harm users, and accounts can be suspended. The official API, with approved templates, is the supported way to message at scale.
How long does a messaging restriction last?
Meta starts with a warning. Repeated violations bring a 1 or 3 day block on template messages, then a 5, 7 or 30 day block on all messages, then an account lock that only an appeal removes, and finally permanent removal.
How is my quality rating worked out?
From how people received your messages over the past seven days, weighted towards the most recent. Blocks, reports, mutes, archives and the reasons people give when they block you all count.
Is this check official?
No. It is a guide built from WhatsApp’s Business Messaging Policy and Messaging Guidelines (updated 23 September 2026) and Meta’s enforcement documentation. WhatsApp alone decides on restrictions.
